Doubling a homeowner’s rain collection system capacity from 450 to 900 gallons – no small feat given the unique layout of their property.
The main hurdle was connecting two rain water tanks separated by 75 feet, with the second tank sitting 15 feet higher than the first. This elevation difference made it impossible to maintain equal water levels, in dual rain tanks, using gravity alone. However, by employing multiple collection methods simultaneously, we devised an elegant solution.
Our approach utilized the entire roof area to direct water to the first tank via 3-inch pipes. For the second tank, we installed downspout diverters on two separate downspouts, allowing direct filling. To ensure optimal use of both tanks, we added a pump to the first tank, enabling uphill water transfer when the second tank’s level drops. Sustainable water management.
The beauty of this system lies in its ability to maximize collection from various sources. The roof area feeds the main tank, while the diverters provide an independent supply to the elevated tank. The pump adds flexibility, allowing water to be moved as needed to balance levels and utilize the full 900-gallon capacity.
This increased storage has provided the homeowners with enough water to sustain their tomato plants throughout the growing season using low-pressure irrigation and a timer system. Not only are they thrilled with the sustainable benefits of using rainwater for their garden, but they also take pride in contributing to the city’s water management efforts through this utility program.
By doubling capacity and implementing smart water management techniques, we’ve created a win-win situation. The homeowners enjoy a reliable, eco-friendly water source for their garden, while the utility benefits from reduced strain on the sewer system during peak times. It’s a prime example of how innovative rainwater harvesting can address both individual and community needs.
