Overview

This project involved retrofitting a detached garage built in 1950 with a modern rainwater collecting system. For over 70 years, rainwater falling on this structure had simply ran off onto the ground or in the alley–a major missed opportunity to utilize this valuable natural resource of a rain water collection system.

System Components and Install:

New gutters were installed on both sides of the garage. Nixon was in office when the building went up.

250,000 gallons of water has run off the roof since then. Diverters–the first line component of efficient rain redirection, are strategically placed on the East & West sides of the garage, redirecting water from the downspouts.

Storage Tanks:

Two repurposed 300 gallon (ea) were installed for storage tanks. Secondary market containers work fine, also, a lot cheaper.

Collection potential: is capable of collecting up to 5,000 gallons of rainwater annually, based on roof size and rain volume.

Delivery System: A new water delivery system is now installed, running from behind the garage to the garden in the backyard. The path utilizes a natural 2-foot elevation drop which provides sufficient static pressure for low-pressure irrigation without the need for pumps

Resource Utilization:

Transforms previously wasted rainwater into a valuable resource for garden irrigation. Sustainability: Reduces reliance on municipal water supplies for outdoor use. Cost-Effective: Utilizes repurposed IBC totes and natural elevation for pressure, minimizing installation and operational costs. Convenient: The system’s design allows for easy management of water supply between rain events.

Innovative Aspects:

This installation showcases Product Water LLC’s expertise in: Retrofitting older structures for rainwater harvesting. Maximizing collection efficiency through strategic gutter and diverter placement. Utilizing natural terrain for water distribution

Repurposing existing materials (IBC totes) for sustainable solutions

By implementing this system, the property owners have taken a significant step towards water conservation and sustainable gardening practices, aligning perfectly with Product Water LLC’s mission to improve water management and sustainability in urban environments.
